Summary

Nina de Gramont's The Christie Affair is a beguiling novel of star-crossed lovers, heartbreak, revenge, and murder—and a brilliant re-imagination of one of the most talked-about unsolved mysteries of the twentieth century。

Every story has its secrets。
Every mystery has its motives。

“A long time ago, in another country, I nearly killed a woman。 It’s a particular feeling, the urge to murder。 It takes over your body so completely, it’s like a divine force, grabbing hold of your will, your limbs, your psyche。 There’s a joy to it。 In retrospect, it’s frightening, but I daresay in the moment it feels sweet。 The way justice feels sweet。”

The greatest mystery wasn’t Agatha Christie’s disappearance in those eleven infamous days, it’s what she discovered。

London, 1925: In a world of townhomes and tennis matches, socialites and shooting parties, Miss Nan O’Dea became Archie Christie’s mistress, luring him away from his devoted and well-known wife, Agatha Christie。

The question is, why? Why destroy another woman’s marriage, why hatch a plot years in the making, and why murder? How was Nan O’Dea so intricately tied to those eleven mysterious days that Agatha Christie went missing?

A beautiful and intricate story that really redefines truth in all of its confusing glory! I found the novel and its most unique narrator quite brilliant!

I've been a fan of Agatha Christie's work during my teen years。 I read many of her books and enjoyed the mystery。 I honestly never looked into the person behind the books, aka Agatha's life, so I never heard about her disappearance until I stumbled upon this book (the cover is fantastic and this is what caught my eye at first + the mention of Christie in the title = marketing well done)。 Before reading the book, I briefly researched her short disappearance but it was never fully explained, givin I've been a fan of Agatha Christie's work during my teen years。 I read many of her books and enjoyed the mystery。 I honestly never looked into the person behind the books, aka Agatha's life, so I never heard about her disappearance until I stumbled upon this book (the cover is fantastic and this is what caught my eye at first + the mention of Christie in the title = marketing well done)。 Before reading the book, I briefly researched her short disappearance but it was never fully explained, giving room to different theories, gossip, and。。。books! The Christie Affair is written from a point of view of a fictional character, Nan O'Dea, loosely based on a real-life person, Nancy Neele, Archie Christie's mistress, and second wife。 Although the book might indicate the focus is Christie, she's not。 The story follows Nan O'Dea from her childhood, teen years, to adulthood。 We learn about her family, friends, her hopes and dreams, and ultimately - her motivation for wanting to marry Agatha's husband。 The narrative jumps from one point in time to the other multiple times, but I found it very easy to follow and understand the timeline。 This was a very interesting book because through it author continuously "spoils" it。 I've never encountered something similar, that chapter after chapter author bluntly reveals how the entire story ends, but you're still captivated by it and you want to keep on reading because you need to know why it unraveled the way it did。 There are some plot twists, but the majority of them are predictable。There are some difficult topics the author made a part of the book - rape, forced adoption, involvement of the church in those practices, suicide, murder, war。 I feel like the author had a lot more to say about the topic of forced adoption。If you thought you'd learn more about Agatha Christie from this book, skip it。 However, if you want to read an interesting story about love, romance, revenge, war。。。it's an interesting read! 。。。more

This book was super fun to read with lots of twists and turns you never saw coming。 I didn’t know much about Agatha Christie other than her being a mystery author。 This book made me do some side reading and research about Agatha, her life and this disappearance。 I think I will read it again (after finishing my long TBR list) so that I can find the clues。 So good! Highly recommend!

This book was really Good。 It was a slow burn and I almost end but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did。 Although fantastic in story, I feel it captured the human element really well。 Not just a feel good book with a happy ending but a narrator that you're not entirely sure you like but slow!y grow to understand。 A good portrayal of sorrow and heartbreak and longing, and loss and love。 This book was really Good。 It was a slow burn and I almost end but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did。 Although fantastic in story, I feel it captured the human element really well。 Not just a feel good book with a happy ending but a narrator that you're not entirely sure you like but slow!y grow to understand。 A good portrayal of sorrow and heartbreak and longing, and loss and love。 。。。more

I’ve been waiting to read this book for so long, and it was worth every day I had to wait。 The twists and turns and clues were, as Agatha notes in describing her own writing, right there in front of me—but I missed them completely them for being so engrossed in the characters and narrator—and found myself gasping out loud several times。 What a well-woven narrative that moves seamlessly back and forth in time with such a captivating voice。 I enjoyed every page。 ♥️♥️♥️

This book isn’t what I expected。 It’s in the point of view of Agatha’s husband’s mistress。 Agatha isn’t in it enough to advertise her name with it at all。 And the author just seemed to want to use her name to sell books。This was a waste of my time and disappointment。 It’s almost completely fictional。 And I wish I hadn’t wasted so many hours on this。

An interesting take on Agatha Christie disappearance。 It’s only with this retelling that I figured out I am Agatha’s age when she disappeared。 I really likes Nan’s story and the murder mystery!

This is the first historical fiction/romance novel I have read to do with Agatha Christie。 The book is narrated by Nan O'Dea, the mistress of Agatha's husband, Archie。 I found that the book focused quite a bit on her background, family, and her life growing up。 There were a couple of plot twists and reveals in this book which were satisfying。 I wish that more of the book and the story had focused on Agatha Christie。3。5/5。 This is the first historical fiction/romance novel I have read to do with Agatha Christie。 The book is narrated by Nan O'Dea, the mistress of Agatha's husband, Archie。 I found that the book focused quite a bit on her background, family, and her life growing up。 There were a couple of plot twists and reveals in this book which were satisfying。 I wish that more of the book and the story had focused on Agatha Christie。3。5/5。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm not really sure about this one。 It felt like two books stitched together, and I don't think it worked。 I love Agatha Christie and I have read about her disappearance (of course) so I was looking forward to this - I pre-ordered my copy。 But I just am not sure this worked as a story of Agatha Christie。The writing style was a bit confusing at times - first person perspective from Nan O'Dea's point of view talked about things that happened to other characters when she wasn't there, and wasn't cl I'm not really sure about this one。 It felt like two books stitched together, and I don't think it worked。 I love Agatha Christie and I have read about her disappearance (of course) so I was looking forward to this - I pre-ordered my copy。 But I just am not sure this worked as a story of Agatha Christie。The writing style was a bit confusing at times - first person perspective from Nan O'Dea's point of view talked about things that happened to other characters when she wasn't there, and wasn't clear how she knew this。 I got her sections confused with those of Chiltern a few times。 I don't know, I find the idea of rewriting Archie's mistress Nan's life and giving her a fictional back story (particularly one so tragic!) and suggesting that Agatha and Archie's daughter was not in fact their daughter, doesn't feel right when these were real people。 Nan's history and her awful past does overshadow the book and it is more about Nan and her life than Agatha - and actually is a very interesting, and sad, story。 It's not really what I was expecting, as I thought this would focus on Agatha。Of course, Archie's mistress was actually Nancy Neale, not Nan O'Dea。 Even so, I think this would have worked better if it had been about fictional characters - inspired by Agatha's story, rather than a real one。 I found it interesting and Nan's story was gripping, but having this story discuss real people didn't do it for me。 。。。more

Really interesting take on an obscure period where renowned author Agatha Christie went missing。 LOVED the inclusion of Magdalene houses in Ireland。 I find this topic super interesting but not often explored。 Relatable characters and thorough details on settings。 The tone changed in the conclusion and I didn’t love that, but very intriguing read over all that I would recommend。

Interesting story。 The mystery was different than others I have read and difficult to predict。 I enjoyed it。

This is a very interesting plot - what did Agatha Christie do when she went missing for days? Nan O'Dea successfully ensnared Agatha's husband, Archie; after years of slowing catching his eye, building an easy and laid back relationship to an engagement, Nan insists Archie tell Agatha he is divorcing her。Though Agatha is very aware of the affair and Nan's role as Archie's mistress, Agatha prefers to continue life - until Archie declares he is leaving her。 Agatha just blanks - and must escape。 Th This is a very interesting plot - what did Agatha Christie do when she went missing for days? Great read - the twists bringing all of the characters together was so well done, just revealed tidbit by tidbit。 。。。more

Told from the perspective of Nan, it places the story all within her imagined perceptions of reality and what was happening, placing Christie as a side character。 Would have loved if this explored multiple POVs

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did。 I wasn't ready to like a side chick and understand why Nan went the lengths she did。 Her final trip to Ireland was heartbreaking。 It reminds me of the fact this happened to thousands of women around the world。 Also, if we are not careful, history can repeat itself。 So while not in my usual genre, I recommend! 3。5 stars rounded to 4。 I very much enjoyed the narrator, Nan。 Equally so the portrayal of Agatha Christie。 I found it to be all a bit predictable and full of cliche, but nonetheless very enjoyable。

"Oh, I couldn't possibly solve a crime I hadn't invented。 The point of a good detective story is to make it all obvious。 You throw in enough variables so the reader doubts his own solutions, then at the end he can be pleased with himself for figuring it out。" What a ride this read was。 First, Nan to me was extremely unlikable。 Finnbar was the one who got the shortest stick。 Agatha is very complicated and I didn't like all her decisions。 And both Chilton and Finnbar were the reason I gave this bo "Oh, I couldn't possibly solve a crime I hadn't invented。 The point of a good detective story is to make it all obvious。 You throw in enough variables so the reader doubts his own solutions, then at the end he can be pleased with himself for figuring it out。" What a ride this read was。 First, Nan to me was extremely unlikable。 Finnbar was the one who got the shortest stick。 Agatha is very complicated and I didn't like all her decisions。 And both Chilton and Finnbar were the reason I gave this book 4 stars。 Very loyal men (even to their detriment。) The narration was confusing sometimes, because the entire story is told from Nan, but there are times when there is a lot going on that you forget Nan is still narrating。 Overall, this would be a great in person book club choice, because this book lends to all types of opinions and questions。 。。。more

Agatha Christie's 10-day disappearance in 1926 has never been explained。 The author always claimed she couldn't remember where she'd been。 de Gramont imagines a highly plausible explanation, and then populates it with colorful supporting characters, love, betrayal, jealousy and murder。 A rollicking good time。 Christie herself would be pleased。 Looking forward to the limited series。 Highly recommend。 Agatha Christie's 10-day disappearance in 1926 has never been explained。 The author always claimed she couldn't remember where she'd been。 de Gramont imagines a highly plausible explanation, and then populates it with colorful supporting characters, love, betrayal, jealousy and murder。 A rollicking good time。 Christie herself would be pleased。 Looking forward to the limited series。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

Clever concept。 Entertaining。 I feel Agatha’s story is secondary to Nan’s tragic and doomed love story。 Every character, even Archie, is well crafted。 I’m mostly surprised at how little I knew about the Irish history involved in the plot。 However, I’m not a bit shocked at more sadness in the long a woeful tale of the Irish and even less so to discover the church was behind these heinous acts。

Cool premise, but the fact that it’s an imagined account kind of takes the reader out of being fully invested。

The Christie Affair is a story loosely based on the eleven days that Agatha Christie went missing。 It is written through the eyes of Agatha Christie’s mistress and in truth, is mostly a story about her life, and not so much Agatha’s。 I went into this book not really knowing what to expect。 I have actually never read an AC novel, nor had any interest in Agatha Christie, but somehow, I was still drawn to this novel and I am glad that it ended up in my lap (so to speak)。 The general storyline is th The Christie Affair is a story loosely based on the eleven days that Agatha Christie went missing。 It is written through the eyes of Agatha Christie’s mistress and in truth, is mostly a story about her life, and not so much Agatha’s。 I went into this book not really knowing what to expect。 I have actually never read an AC novel, nor had any interest in Agatha Christie, but somehow, I was still drawn to this novel and I am glad that it ended up in my lap (so to speak)。 The general storyline is that Archie, Agatha’s husband tells his wife that he is leaving her for another woman, Nan O’Dea。 Immediately afterward, Agatha disappears and a huge search happens in order to find her。 The narrator goes back and forth from the timeframe of Agatha being gone to in the past of Nan’s life。 Although there were some parts that felt long and drawn out, I really ended up liking the book!
